Cantor Judy Dubin Aranoff
Cantor Dubin Aranoff assumed the position as Associate Cantor in 2003. In addition, she teaches General and Judaic Music at our Adat Ari El Day School. Cantor Aranoff received her Hazzan's certification from the Cantor’s Assembly in 2007. Born and raised in Los Angeles, she received a BA in Psychology in 1976, a California State Teaching Credential in K – 12 Music and Life Sciences in 1977, and a Master’s degree in Music in 1981, all from the University of California, Los Angeles. She is also a graduate of the Los Angeles Hebrew High School and studied at American Jewish University and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Cantor Dubin Aranoff has worked with the Young Musician’s Foundation and the LA Philharmonic Institute. She was the musical director of two shows at the Morgan-Wixon Theater in Santa Monica, was a music teacher at Heschel and taught at Fairfax High School before coming to Adat Ari El.
In addition to the traditional role as Associate Cantor of a major conservative Synagogue, Cantor Dubin Aranoff is especially proud of her work in the Day School and Religious School, teaching children how to read Torah and preparing them to accept their roles as a B’nai Mitzvah. She finds significant joy in her work on the annual Intergenerational Day performances.
Outside of our community, Cantor Dubin Aranoff currently serves as the Associate Conductor and a singer in the Los Angeles Zimriyah Chorale. She also serves on the Board of Trustees as the Cantor’s Assembly Representative for LA Hebrew High and is the Director of Nashir Choral Ensemble of the American Jewish University.
Judy’s special love is singing Israeli folk songs. She has appeared numerous times singing for various organizations and at different festivals. Judy and her sister, Ruth, have formed a group called Shir Joy, and have performed at the Santa Barbara Jewish Festival.
Judy did not come to Adat Ari El for the first time as it’s Associate Cantor. She became a member soon after the birth of her first child in1984. She and her husband, Mel, became Shabbat regulars. Clergy do not often come from within the ranks of the Synagogue, but Judy knows from experience what Adat Ari El means to its members.
Judy is the daughter of Rabbi Paul Dubin and of Esther Dubin, of blessed memory, both respected leaders in the LA Jewish community. Judy and Mel have two fabulous daughters, Ronit and Yael, who have now taken over the reigns as cantors at the UCLA Hillel High Holiday services from their Mom.
