KORAH

In last week’s Torah portion, we read how the Israelites, due to their own lack of trust, were doomed to wander in the desert for forty years before they will enter the Holy Land. Naturally, this leads to a certain amount of discontent and anger on their part. Hence, they are ripe for a change in leadership. Into this brew of discontent comes Korah, who stirs up a group of people and with them confronts Moshe with a powerful argument that must have sounded very good to his followers:

“Now there betook himself Korah, son of Yitzhar son of Kehat son of Levi, and Datan and Aviram the sons of Eliav and On son of Pelet, the sons of Re’uven to rise up before Moshe with men-of-stature from the Children of Israel, fifty and two hundred, leaders of the community, those Called in the Appointed-Council, men of name. They assembled against Moshe and against Aharon and said to them: “Too much is yours! Indeed, the entire community, the entirety of them are holy, and in their midst is YHWH! Why then do you exalt yourselves over the assembly of YHWH? (Numbers 16:1-3, translation by Prof. Everett Fox)

One the surface, Korah’s complaint is powerful and needs to be taken seriously. His argument is simple: if all of community is holy and God is in their midst, why should Moshe and Aharon retain all the leadership positions? Given that all the people are holy and Moshe and Aharon’s leadership failed to bring the people to the Holy land, why should they remain in power? Bring in new blood and vision and maybe the community’s fortunes will turn around. It all sounds so good! ...read more

School’s almost out but the pantry is still in session! In fact, we operate 365 days a year. Last year we fed almost 65,000 people. The summer season usually finds our supplies dwindling. Anytime you wish to donate food the pantry has a grey collection bin right inside the breezeway at
Adat Ari El. We can always use the following items:

Canned soups, vegetables, fruits, beans, and proteins (such as fish, meat, chicken, chili)
Cereals
Rice
Pasta
Snacks
Peanut Butter

The North Hollywood Interfaith Food Pantry (NHIFP) will soon have a website where you can learn more about us. As one of our founding congregations, Adat Ari El has played a vital role in the growth of our pantry. Our address will be www.nhifp.org and we hope you’ll check us out soon!
